The Caltagirone Illuminated Stairs - Catania

With the commemoration of St. James in Caltagirone, in the province of Catania, from the 24th to the 25th of July a popular celebration returns -- one that culminates in the decoration of the town stairs, The Santa Maria del Monte Stairs, with votive candles.

The decorations, from year to year, have no recurring theme but rather differ according to subjects relating to the Patron Saint or the cityà. The designs are created from the typically colorful Caltagirone ceramics, providing lanterns to be lit simultaneously. The traditional votive candles are called "coppi" and are created by hand according to 'ancient traditions '600 years old. The votive candles are lit by the same townspeople, who after 'lighting move to the side streets, regaling the observing audience with a 'singular excitement; the illuminated stairs 'appear to come to life.

During the Illuminated Stairs you can ò watch the procession of the relic of St. James as it travels through the historical center, transported through the streets of Caltagirone enclosed in a 'silver ark.

àOn July 23rd è the design that will come alive every 24th and 25th is already apparent. For the tourists, and to celebrate the Madonna of Ponte, on the evenings of the 14th and 15th of August you can ò attend the traditional presentation of the "Votive Candles" for the Santa Maria del Monte stairs in Caltagirone.

The Santa Maria del Monte stairs è were chosen between 2004 and 2005 to symbolize Sicily in the traditional Sicilian promotional campaign, and during that period received awards in addition to 'enormous visibilityà.
